Urban Agriculture

Urban Agriculture
The Extension Milwaukee County (Extension) has long remained a core source for education, land access, and technical resources pertaining to urban agriculture. The first Extension community garden dates back to 1972 at the historic “Milwaukee County Grounds”, just northeast of the zoo interchange.
Celebrating the rich diversity and cultural heritage of our gardeners and farmers, we are dedicated to cultivating sustainable urban agriculture hubs across Milwaukee County. Through education, equitable land access, and innovative farming initiatives, we empower communities to grow, connect, and thrive.
Urban Agriculture Programs

Beekeeping Classes
Since 2008, Extension and the Urban Apiculture Institute have offered Wisconsin’s first Certified Beekeeper Program. Participants can:

Demonstration Farm Network
In 2025, Extension Milwaukee County staff partnered with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to launch the Milwaukee Urban Demonstration (MUD) Farm Network.
MUD supports urban farmers across Milwaukee County as they implement conservation practices related to soil health, water quality, wildlife, and crop productivity.

Agroforestry
In partnership with the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, we’re establishing an agroforestry demonstration site at Kohl Farm.
This project highlights sustainable land management practices using native Upper Midwest species to create a resilient, ecologically rich landscape that supports both food production and biodiversity.

Technical Assistance
We provide technical support to gardeners and farmers throughout Milwaukee County. Whether you’re troubleshooting soil issues, building a new raised bed, or tackling pest problems, our team is here to help. And if we don’t have the answer, one of our 600+ Extension colleagues across Wisconsin will—our statewide network includes experts in every topic imaginable!
